We're also already starting to see games get very expensive. Hence the controller needed to play the console will become way more valuable than the console itself. The Gamepad is essential and since they're already somewhat unreliable and tend to break it may be difficult to get a functional one 10 years from now. You'll also get people owning multiple copies of popular games like Smash, Mario Kart or Splatoon which will drive the prices up for new Wii U collectors.

I agree that many of the people that are buying the Wii U are more dedicated than people buying the PS4 and XBONE and probably won't trade their games in to places like Gamestop. I doubt you will even see it in yard sales, sort of like how you really don't see the Saturn or even the Dreamcast. I'm thinking the Wii U is going to be a nightmare for people to collect for 10 years from now. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read this. You can still get most of the games on the system for less than $60, and most of the truly rare games are, like 10 or less on Amazon. GameStop probably won't carry Wii U games in their store if NX doesn't have backward compatibility. My only advice for collecting for the Wii U is get the games now. Don't even get me started on the Bayonetta Book of Angels special edition, or the million different Smash bundles, or the Ganondorf figure, or the blue shell. No way am I standing out by Nintendo World NYC at 1 am to get a scarf, a treasure chest, and Hyrule Warriors. The only one I have so far that might be rare by demand at some point is the Xenoblade Chronicles X one.

Even less people own these games, and demand will probably continue to grow past the Wii U's lifespan.Īnd then there are the collector's editions for games.oh boy. Which leads me into Niche games, like Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and probably Devil's Third.

Most of the people who buy the Wii U now have no intention of selling anything other than the launch shovelware games. I can see Mario Kart 8 going for 30-36 (loose) because it's a) a great game for b) an unpopular system, that c) has a name brand. When people go to buy games for the Wii in 20-25 years, the price will be about 15-20 (loose), because you're paying the Nintendo tax, mostly. The thing about the Wii is that is has an exuberant amount of supply for big first party titles, see Mario Kart Wii. The GOOD first party games will be pretty much the games you'll see, but for higher prices than you'd want.

Triple A companies also released ports of 360 and PS3 games to the Wii U in this time frame.

Companies for the first year of two of the Wii U's lifespan were releasing things like Rapala's Pro Bass Fishing and Hello Kitty Kruisers. Most companies banked on the name brand of the Wii for casuals to flock to it, but that day never came. That's actually a unique thing that the Wii U has, launch shovelware. Only people that really like Nintendo still own a Wii U, thus, in most lots, you'll find mostly 1st party stuff with the occasional launch shovelware. Therefore, there are less casual people to produce games for. Most people that own a Wii U don't casually own it, or they would have traded it back to get a PS4 or XB1. Sports Games (Madden, NHL, NBA) Worthless and in 75% of collections.Ĭollecting for the Wii U is like eliminating most of the shovelware, kids, and sports games from the equation. Maybe you'll find one or two in 5% of people's collections. Only a collector or someone into that genre got it, and you'll have to pay quite a bit online to get it. Niche Games (Klonoa, Rainfall Trilogy, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn) What you actually had to buy when the time when it was released to get. Shovelware (MySims, Deca Sports, My Horse and Me: Riding for Gold) What you'll find in most collections varied, but bad.

Brawl and Mario Kart Wii you're going to find more of, but generally, good games will be in about 45% of the places you'll be.

Kids Games (Just Dance, Skylanders, Wii Fit) Super Common in about 80% of the stuff you find.ġst Party Nintendo Games / Recognizable IP (Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Sonic) Common by print #s, but more expensive because of quality. With the Wii, you have 4 categories of games you'll find at swap meets, lots, ect. Well, collecting for the Wii U will certainly be different from the Wii. I was thinking where Wii U collecting might be headed earlier after someone irl asked me.
